Synopsis

A song that strikes at first-listen as an upbeat song telling you to have a nice day, “HAVE A NICE DAY” by World Order takes on the perspective of an idol fan and his daily act in Akihabara of visiting his favorite idol/group at their mini-concerts (most likely AKB48 as indicated by the music video). Even amongst the amateur dancing and live mini-concerts, this fan enjoys sending his love as he cheers on his favorite idol, receiving back indiscriminate affection from her although it’s not reciprocating his feelings. Even then, his day-ins and day-outs continue every Saturday to go see her, all just to have a nice day.

My love will hopelessly not reach you

Translation Notes

  • Otaku is a term commonly thought of as a “fan” when used by those of the West (America, Europe). While it isn’t being misused, the term originally held much more negative meanings where it was associated with being “abnormal” or “dysfunctional”. As of now, people in Japan will use it similarly to “fan” (and will use it to describe anyone who indulges deep into any given hobby; people who collects playing cards and know lots about them may be called a “playing card otaku“), but caution should be taken in its use.
  • Haori jacket: In context, fans of the idol concerts will usually attend while waving glow sticks. But for those who want to go beyond, they will have more than glow sticks, wearing headbands, T-shirts and (for the hardcore fans) a special haori jacket that expresses their passion usually towards the group or even a specific member of the group.
  • Smart manner: Not much of a Western term, or even an Eastern term, “smart” in Japanese culture, and when referring to fashion preference, indicates an alternate meaning of “stylish” or “fashionable”. It can also indicate being “efficient”, although this is restricted to tools, habits and machinery.
  • The lyrics specifically note mentioning a noun of “that girl”. But in context, this line is actually a thought made by the narrator rather than an actual statement or speech of words. Thus, in this line, he is referring to the girl (likely one of the idols onstage) he is directly “singing” to throughout this song.
  • In the original lyrics, “heart pattern” is used instead of “air of loveliness”. But, due to how it did not flow with the translated lyrics, the latter was used. The original lyrics refer to how the song sung by the girl is emitting heart patterns into the air, creating a loving atmosphere in the concert hall.

Author’s Notes

You don’t get to see love songs that speak in the Akiba tongue, if you get what I mean. It specifically demonstrates a daily occurrence to young otaku men who adore idols such as AKB48. No matter how much they commit to their beloved idol, it just doesn’t reach. It’s an obvious fact that normal fans are very unlikely to be able to connect with top idols, but the way idol groups in Japan such as AKB interact with their audience gives an interesting construct. I can lecture this topic more, but that would take some time. All I wish to say is that this song is able to illustrate this unique kind of adoration.

The WORLD ORDER group itself, especially Genki Sudo who put together this group, is inspiring. WORLD ORDER’s videos play on how Japan focuses on shuudan koudou (collective action) in its society as a base to their performance which is filled with synchronized robot dancing as they don business suits. The subjects WORLD ORDER touch upon into their videos are also interesting; although sometimes subtle, the lyrics and imagery in their videos voice out opinions on world issues. I would recommend anyone to watch and listen to their music videos for either the entertaining performances or the possible deeper depths of their songs.
