Synopsis

Crossing over different planes and crossings to reach one’s goal, “Ukiyo Crossing” by UVERworld talks about the struggles of living in the world and being able to surpass the walls that are in our way. We may feel like we are nothing but insignificant, but the singer tells us to realize that we all are facing our own issues of different sizes. We shouldn’t down our own self, thinking that we cannot go on. There is a tomorrow that is just for us.

Translation Notes

  • In regards to the sound, the “knock knock” onomatopoeia may refer to someone figuratively knocking on the singer’s “door” to wake them up. And by doing so, the singer can be on his way to be “on the crossing to choose”.
  • “Crossing” is referred to throughout the song, representing something of the likes of a scramble crossing. Just like crossroads in reality, every person is destined to choose their own decisions as they cross paths with people on this world crossing.
  • “God’s greatest creation” has at times been referred to us human beings. Thus, the singer talks of how even humans are lost lambs as long as we try not to stand on our own two legs.
  • These lines, such as “that way of thinking”, is a form of optimism the singer is placing onto himself.
  • At the moment of this writing, it is a mystery to me as to what “year 2000 of the 15th age” refers to. Also written as “the 15th era’s 2000th year”, it may refer to a point in time significant to the theme of the song.

Author’s Notes

“Ukiyo Crossing” by UVERworld (I believe I’ve written the band’s name quite a bit on this page) is one of those powerful thematic songs that just riles up within you, even if you do not understand the language. Just like with many songs that is capable of telling its tale not only through its lyrics but also through its melody, this song speaks an unspeakable truth that we are all facing against the hardships of this era, yet we should keep on butting heads with it with all we’ve got. I would be joyed to see this theme being reused for an action anime opening, but that’s up to the business side.

“Ukiyo Crossing” is admittedly one of the first songs that had pushed me to start translating in the first place. While I did not actually translate the song itself until recently, it is one of the handful of songs which motivated me to start translating J-pop songs (“J-pop, too awesome to not translate” per se). If I hadn’t been motivated back then (was it around 2010? 2009?), I don’t think I would be still passionately translating as I do now. Or would I? That side though, aside from its encouraging theme, this song brings to me notions of nostalgia to when I was fresh in the translating scheme.
