Synopsis

In the song “Moonlit Dawn -Day Breakers-” by Gackt, one man makes a promise to his beloved that he’ll never again let go of her. Fearing the rising dawn because of how its too beautiful for someone as scarred as himself, the singer wants to make up to his beloved who he had hurt in the past. He wants to embrace her, have her smile and ultimately never be away from his side.

Lyrics

miageta sora ni wa hitotsu no kumo ga mure kara hagurete
As I look up into the sky, there is a cloud that strays from the others
ima no boku to onaji youni shikabane no naka de toiki wo sagashiteru
Just like how I am now, looking for a sign of life* within this corpse
kimi wo akaku someta kono te wa
Will these hands that had painted you in red
itsu no hi ni ka arainagaseru toki ga kuru no desuka?
ever reach a time when they’ll be washed away and cleaned?

yume no tsudzuki egaku sono hi made
Until the day we can write what comes next in our dream
kaze yureta hoshi tomoshite
I light the star that sways in the wind
itsuka deaeta toki wa mou ichido
Whenever the next time comes when we meet once again
hohoemi wo soete
Please smile for my sake
tsuyoku dakishimete
As I’ll embrace you tightly

ano hi no yozora ni kimi to kaketa negaigoto
The wish I had made with you to that night sky of that day
kumo no sukima ni hitori sagashite
I search for it among the break of the clouds alone
Even now, I embrace my sins as I become a corpse
yoake ni obieteru
I’m scared of the dawn*

kawashita yakusoku kanau sono hi made
Until the day that I can fulfill the promise we made
ami ni nureta hoshi kazoete
I count the stars drenched in the rain
itsuka deaeta toki wa mou nido to
Whenever the next time comes when we meet, never again
hanarenai youni
Will I ever part away from you
tsuyoku dakishimete
For I’ll embrace you tightly

mata kurikaesu mabayui yoake ni
The pretty dawn that keeps on repeating
me wo somuketaku naru hodo sabishii kedo
I’m so lonely that I want to avert my gaze from it
tameiki no ame ga furihajimeta to shite mo
Even if the rain of sighs begins to fall
kono namida kakushite kureru kara
Because they hide these tears of mine
kizudarake no te wo nobashite
So please reach out with your injured hands

yume no tsudzuki egaku sono hi made
Until the day we can write what comes next in our dream
kaze ni yurera hoshi tomoshite
I light the star that sways in the wind
itsuka deaeta toki wa mou ichido
Whenever the next time comes when we meet once again
hohoemi wo osete
Please smile for my sake

kawashita yakusoku kanau sono hi made
Until the day that I can fulfill the promise we made
ame ni nureta hoshi kazoete
I count the stars drenched in the rain
itsuka deaeta toki wa mou nido to
Whenever the next time comes when we meet, never again
離さない
hanasanai
Will I let go of you

On the day when I will fulfill that promise
saigo no yoake ni tsuki wo kazarou
Let the moon in the sky of the last dawn
dakara deaeta toki wa mou dare mo
That’s why, when we see each other, I will
hanarenai you ni
never let go of you
hanarenai youni
never let go of you
tsuyoku dakishimite
For I’ll embrace you tightly

Translation Notes

  • In Japanese, the lyrics directly translate as “searching for a breath in the corpse”, referring to finding life within the dead body. Instead of keeping it in the confusing word format as mentioned, “sign of life” illustrated the meaning of the lyrics best.
  • The “dawn” has many different interpretations, and most of the common ones fit into this song for what Gackt is attempting to portray through the lyrics. For one, the dawn can represent the arrival of a new tomorrow, where another day has come where the singer hadn’t fulfilled his promise yet. The dawn could also refer to the concept of “with the end of one, there is the beginning of another”, where the dawn represents the death of the singer for a new tomorrow that may be without him. This however is up to any listener’s interpretation.

Author’s Notes

Gackt is an interesting J-music whose music I like. Admittedly, I don’t like all of what he records and releases, but there is for sure within me a respect to him for how he’s composed himself. As a TV personality, as a stage performer, as a movie actor, he carries himself in a way that awes me. And I won’t deny how Japanese-esque he makes himself (refer to the image at the top of this blog; that is one sexy guy, if I say so myself).

Gackt is also known for being a musician in rock and other genres I usually don’t tread. But the way J-rock performs, or at least seems to perform, welcomes me more than some of the rock I’ve heard from other countries. But let’s not ignore, Japan has its own share of hardcore rock music that really beats those drums and pull the power-chord. But just like with this song, even though you will see the performers shaking their bodies in the music video, my ears having felt violated in their own way. Let’s not forget that the album also has an orchestra version of the song, which I recommend to everyone. I’ll drop it at that: Gackt’s music is fantastic.
