Synopsis

A dream is awaiting in Natsuko Asou‘s “Everyday sunshine line!” as anticipation coincides with the feelings of love and hope. Instead of looking down at what troubles may come, the singer illustrates an enthusiastic optimism that tomorrow will bring events that could only ever happen in dreams. All because the world is spinning from small miracles and a touch of magic.

Translation Notes

  • The Japanese lyrics, and Japanese itself, takes the line “rays of the sun” quite literally as the original Japanese lyrics actually say “the grains of the sun”. When looking at the “rays” created by the sun, it is in truth light reflected off dust in the air. But for the sake of not needing to explain that above or here, I simply let it be “rays” instead of “grains”.
  • “キホンまわれ右” is a term that is not exactly used often in Japan and doesn’t have a designated translation due to the meaning behind the term. To put in simple words, the term means “to look away from what’s the objective” in the manner of becoming off-track.
  • At times, as noticed with other Japanese terms, the lyrics are written in katakana. When done with Japanese words and terms that are usually written in hiragana, it is the lyricist’s way of emphasizing the terms instead of utilizing obvious methods such as using bold/italicized text. Just to note, it does not mean the term is exactly an important term to the song, although there is meaning to using the katakana form otherwise.

Author’s Notes

“Everyday sunshine line!” is one of those songs that sing optimistically about love (ambiguous of whether if it’s romantic or more along the lines of friendly love). And just like so, the energy put into the song has that same empowerment as if it’s trying to tell more of a story than what the lyrics lay down. It is to the point that you can just find yourself chuckling as you watch the singer dance awkwardly in the music video instead of dejecting it.

What I possibly like most out of this song is actually its portrayal during the ending of “Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou” with the protagonist and 5 heroines (one of them, Lily Shiraishi, is a heroine more elaborated in other media formats such as the light novel; her story has little time to be explored in the anime). Moving to the rhythm of the song, we get a glimpse of how each heroine would interact with the protagonist in their own fashion, going from appeal to kissing and finally cuddling. These interactions all done in a chibi/deformed mode makes it all the more cute. I wouldn’t be surprised if people mistook the song for a song full of romance and love, when in actuality it keeps that ambiguous.

As a last note, I recommend listening to some of Natsuko Asou’s anime songs. Even if they are few in numbers due to being a more recent singer since 2009, they are prominently for romantic comedies, and I find the songs fitting to the show their are used for. Her voice is rather recognizable, which I enjoyed when I noticed her songs for the series she sang for.
