worldorderthenextphase

“THE NEXT PHASE” is a song written and choreographed by Genki Sudo (須藤 元気; sudou genki) and performed by WORLD ORDER, a dancing crew assembled by Sudo to dance like robots while wearing business suits. Released on YouTube on October 19th, 2015, the song is a message about understanding others and connecting the world. The video features locations in Paris, France and Berlin, Germany. Watch it here.
Sudo has noted that this song is the last music video he will perform in. He will continue being a producer of songs, but he will not dance together with the members of WORLD ORDER.

“Chaos has been taking place everywhere in the world now. I believe it is a sign to step into a next phase for the human race. It can be said that such phenomenon might be a positive reaction shifting toward from “Material civilization” to “Civilization with placing more importance on love and care”. I have created this artwork with such sentiment.”

Synopsis

The world is filled with disconnection and discord, and “THE NEXT PHASE” by WORLD ORDER tells us that the next course of action that should be taken is to reconnect it. The world as of today is filled with people of all kinds, of different skin colours and different penmanship. And with modern technology, disconnection has begun, causing a detachment amongst ourselves. Most of us are wondering what to do with our life, wishing only to be happy with it. The next phase… is to reevaluate the walls that have been made in this generation so that we can truly reconnect with each other, for our own sake and for the sake of the future.

Lyrics

I don’t believe, What you believe.
You don’t believe, What I believe.

「生き方が生ってない」と 誰かがテレビで祟る
ikikata ga natte nai to dareka ga TEREBI de tataru
“You are not living life fully,” someone lectures on the TV
本当の答えは何だろうか 僕は思う
hontou no kotae wa nandarou ka boku wa omou
“What is the true answer?” I wonder
肌の色違っていても みんな同じ思いさ
hada no iro chigatte ite mo minna onaji omoi sa
Even though our skin are different colours, we all think the same
誰もが幸せになりたいんだ
dare mo ga shiawase ni naritainda
Everyone wants to become happy

LET’S STOP THE DISCON*, LET’S STOP THE DISCON
AND MOVE TO THE NEXT PHASE
LET’S CHANGE THE WALLS, LET’S CHANGE THE WALLS
AND MOVE TO THE NEXT PHASE

Now I believe, What you believe.
Now you believe, What I believe.

夕方のスーパーのレジ 僕もこと並ぶ人々
yuugata no SUUPAA no REJI, boku mo koto narabu hitobito
At a supermarket register one evening, I line up with many others
服とエクリチュールもそれぞれでも 君は思うよ
fuku to EKURICHURU mo sorezore demo, kimi wa omou yo
“Even though our clothes and écriture* are varied,” that is what you think of
今カートに入れた希望を数え 明日の夢見る
ima KAATO ni ireta kibou wo kazoe, asu no yume miru
Counting the hope you’ve placed in the cart, you see a dream of tomorrow
誰もが幸せになりたいんだ
dare mo ga shiawase ni naritainda
Everyone wants to become happy

LET’S STOP THE DISCON, LET’S STOP THE DISCON
AND MOVE TO THE NEXT PHASE
LET’S CHANGE THE WALLS, LET’S CHANGE THE WALLS
AND MOVE TO THE NEXT PHASE

LET’S STOP THE DISCON, LET’S STOP THE DISCON
AND MOVE TO THE NEXT PHASE
LET’S CHANGE THE WALLS, LET’S CHANGE THE WALLS
AND MOVE TO THE NEXT PHASE

Translation Notes

  • Due to the lack of official lyrics, this word has been heard as either “Discord” or “Discon”. Both are suitable to the song lyrics; the later is currently being used, but please also envision it as “discord” too.
    • “Discord” would refer to how the world is being disrupted, whether if it is by social media or national violence.
    • “Discon” can either mean “disconnection” or “disorderly conduct”. The former is the likely use of the words in the lyrics, as the song is attempting to portray that the world is “disconnected” and he wants it to reconnect.
  • The term “écriture” is French for “writing,” and can refer to the penmanship of a person. It can be said that one’s writing style does hold personality and individuality.

Author’s Notes

The latest song by WORLD ORDER as of this post, along with being the last music video Genki Sudo personally participates in. It does not mean that he is not part of WORLD ORDER anymore, but for his own reasons, he isn’t going to dance in them anymore. He will still produce for WORLD ORDER, and more than likely still sing; he just won’t be in the music videos with the other six members. Even then, I’m sure WORLD ORDER fans enjoy his presence in the videos, with no ill intentions to the other members.

Just like I had mentioned in my first WORLD ORDER translation post, WORLD ORDER is always inspiring. Even if their lyrics are simple and most of the attention is placed on their performance, there is a depth in their songs that talk about world issues right under our noses. In this song, the subject this time around points a finger at modern society and how it has created a disconnection between people. While it doesn’t go too deep into that issue, the lyrics vies us to enter a “new phase” where we reattain the connection in the world. No, not by destroying the walls, but by changing them. We’ve constructed them for a reason, and it’s not necessary to break what had been made. The walls just need a revision, to say simply.
