Synopsis

SPYAIR’s “I’m a Believer” features triumphant tunes with its title drop of “I’m a believer”. In the tireless pursuit this narrator reaches for, he seeks an answer in the world, while the world seeks one in him. But for sure, the narrator knows that he will continue to survive until he finds that answer, because he’s a believer in such a future. It does not matter if reality presses him down or if his capabilities seem lacking, the narrator is determined in going up and beyond.

Lyrics

iki wo kirashi nagara hashiritsudzukete
I keep on running forward to the point of being out of breath
oikakeru hibi to mune no atsusa
These days that catch up to me and the blazing heart of mine
miwatasu sekai ni jibun hitori ga
In this world that looks over me, I am there on my own
oitekareru youna ki ga shite
Feeling like I will be left behind by everyone

nani ga tanoshiinda? to hito wa iu keredo
“For what is entertaining?” People continue to ask that
sore wa ore nimo wakaranai
Even I don’t know the answer to that

ashita moshi, umaku ikanakutta tte
Tomorrow, even if nothing goes according to plan
tachidomaranai
I won’t come to a stand still
hoshii nowa tsugi no MAI SERUFU
What I want is the next “my self”
Even if someone tells me that it’s impossible
RAIN hikaretatte
Tells me that I’m at the end of the line
NOO SANKYUU!! koete iku kara
“No thank you” because I’ll go up and beyond

So What?
So What? kono saki ga dou toka
So what? “What will the future bring?”
So What?
So What? hito wa kou da toka
So what? “People are just like this”
So What?
So What? toriaezu, doudatte ii sa
So what? But for now, I don’t care what those mean
So, I’M A BELIEVER*
Because I’m a believer

suki de iru koto tte raku janai daro?
Being here on your own whim, it must be easier said than done, right?
oshiyoseru genjitsu yume no tsurasa
This surging reality and the pain of my dream
girigiri no toki mo jibun’igai wo
In times of complete struggle*, I just felt
tayottara ikenai ki ga shite
that I shouldn’t rely on anyone than myself

nani ga tadashiinda? to ore mo sagasu kedo
“For what is justice*?” I also search for the answer
sore wa dare nimo wakaranai
But no one knows the answer to it

ano hi moshi, kou shitereba nante
On that day, if I could have done it like this
kangae dasu to
I feel disgusted
iya ni naru ne tsugi no WAN SUTEPPU
just by thinking about it, that next “one step”
sore demo moshi, kimi janakya dame da tte
Even if in the case that you tell me
itte moraetara
that I’m the only one for you
Oh SANKYUU!! kidzutsuita hibi
“Oh thank you” to these wounded days

So What?
So What? yasashiku narou toka
So what? “Let’s become kinder”
So What?
So What? sunao de iyou toka
So what? “Let’s live life honestly”
So What?
So What? toariaezu, todoitokya ii sa
So what? For now, it’s fine to think like that
So, I’M A BELIEVER
Because I’m a believer

nani ga tanoshii ka tte?
“For what is entertaining?”
nani ga tadashii ka tte?
“For what is justice?”
sore ga ore nimo wakaru made
Until I understand the answer to those
hashiri tsudzukeru dake sa
I’ll just keep on running forward

ashita moshi, umaku ikanakutta tte
Tomorrow, even if nothing goes according to plan
tachidomaranai
I will not come to a stand still
hoshii nowa tsugi no MAI SERUFU
What I want is the next “my self”
Even if someone tells me that it’s impossible
RAIN hikareta tte
Tells me that I’m at the end of the line
NOO SANKYUU!! koete iku kara
“No thank you”, because I’ll go up and beyond

So What?
So What? kono saki ga dou toka
So what? “What will the future bring?”
So What?
So What? hito wa kou da toka
So what? “People are just like this”
So What?
So What? toriaezu, dou datte ii sa
So what? But for now, I don’t care what those mean
So, I’M A BELIEVER
Because I’m a believer

So, I’M A BELIEVER
Because I’m a believer

Translation Notes

  • With how English written in Japanese songs are at time misused, I had taken the time to “translated” the phrase into something that appropriately aligns with the meaning of the song. Because the narrator is taking an action because of a way of thinking, “because” (which says the action is defined by the person) is used instead of “so” (which considers that the action defines the person).
  • Japanese lesson time: “ギリギリ” (girigiri) is a Japanese phrase used to refer to a time or situation that is “close” or “just in time” in the respect that the objectives are close to not being met.
    • It is commonly used when someone makes it to a “goal” just in time, such as arriving to a meeting or reaching the racing goal in a given time. It can also be used when having just enough items in stock for an event. In the case of this song, the narrator speaks of how they are at the edge of struggle, barely able to get on through.
  • In this phrase, “ただしい” (tadashii) can refer to both “justice” and “correct”. The original better defines what is being asked in the song, as to what is “just”.

Author’s Notes

“I’m a believer” is quite the song that pulls one’s attention away from the struggle and place it on the future. With such a theme, it fits really well for the shonen sports anime, “Haikyuu!!” along with any other anime of the genre. It is common to associate “going beyond one’s limits” with sport anime, if you have watched enough of them. Of course, it can applied to any shonen story that has the protagonist/s attempting to do better.

SPYAIR is one of those bands that I thought was fresh to the anime scene, with my first listen of them being the first opening theme to the 2013 superhero comedy-drama anime “Samurai Flamenco” (サムライフラメンコ). But in truth, after listening to a couple more of their songs as anime theme songs, I looked them up and found out that they had been contributing music for anime ever since 2010 with their debut to anime being “Last Moment” for the 25th ending them of shonen action anime “Bleach.” To me, it shows to me that I should pay attention to bands more often. But it also shows the fact that we can find a variety of bands (new or old) and their history by looking into anime themes.
