Goodnight Tonight (グッナイ・トゥナイ) is a song by retired Vocaloid producer Noboru↑-P (のぼる↑P), whose actual name is Noboru Etou (江藤昇; eetou noboru), with Vocaloid Rin Kagamine (鏡音リン; kagamine rin) providing the vocals. With the song released on both YouTube and NicoNico Douga on September 19th, 2014, it was Noboru↑-P’s second to last vocaloid song before laying down his work as a Vocaloid producer.
The song was later released later that year on December 17th on a one-track album-single. The album is purchasable on iTunes and indirectly on karent. The original YouTube posting can be seen here.

Synopsis

In Noboru↑-P‘s “Goodnight Tonight,” a lone girl who has all the wealth is unable to understand the simple notion that “love” or “friendship” cannot be bought with money, or any riches of the kind. Yet, she continues to look down on others, believing that relationships can be broken and bought as easy as one-two-three. On lonely nights though, she realizes that deep inside, her heart is actually aching. But goodnight to her as she continues to misunderstand this heartache is and remain ignorant as to what “love” truly may be.

Lyrics

kono sekai no subete wa okane de kaeru no sa
The entirety of this world can be bought together with money
hoshiimono wa nandemo kamikire to hikikae
Everything that we desire, they can be traded in for some paper scraps

ano ko wa itsudatte sou dareka to waratteite
The girl over there, you see, is laughing with someone
watashi wa itsudatte sou dare tomo warattenai
And as for me, you see, I am not laughing with anyone

kudaranai yo ne tomodachi nante sa
They are just worthless, the people you call “friends”
dakedo naze darou sukoshi sabishikute
But for some reason, I wonder, I feel a bit lonely

ikura nano? sono kokoro
How much does it cost, that heart of yours?
kaenai hazu wa nai yo ne
It’s not like I can’t buy it, right?
“アイ”なんて安いでしょ
“ai” nante yasui desho
“Love” must be so cheap, isn’t it?
kono te wo totte ima sugu
Take this hand of mine, right now

oh good night kanjite irunda (GUNNAI TUNAI)
Oh good night, I’m feeling it now (goodnight, tonight)
oh good night nanika ga tarinai
Oh good night, that I’m lacking something
GUNNAI TUNAI
Goodnight tonight

sashidashita kono te niwa dare no ato mo tsukazu
In these hands I reach out with, there is no trace of anyone
aritakke no kimochi wa chiri to nari kieteku
Any feelings I had turn to ashes and disappear

naru koto nai TEREFON tsuyoku nigirishimete
I hold on tight to this phone that shouldn’t ring a tune
nariyamanai TEREBI ga NOIZU wo utatteita
The TV continues to drone on, singing out in noise

shizuka ni naru to miminari bakari ga
When it becomes quiet, my ears start to churn
mune ni kodama suru sukoshi itakatta
with the echoes in my heart, and it hurts a bit

ikura nano? sono kokoro
How much does it cost, that heart of yours?
kowaresou na kono kanjou
The emotions look like they’ll break soon
dakishimete hoshii kara
I want to be embraced, so please,
watashi ni “ai” wo ima sugu
Give me that “love”, right now*

oh good night hitorikiri no yoru (GUNNAI TUNAI)
Oh good night, during the lonely nights (goodnight, tonight)
oh good night naite nanka nai
Oh good night, I am not crying
GUNNAI TUNAI
Goodnight tonight

It’s not like I need it, because I’m all fine on my own
dakedo hontou wa sukoshi…
But the truth is, I am a bit…*

ikura nano? sono kokoro
How much does it cost, that heart of yours?
kaenai hazu wa nai yo ne
It’s not like I can’t buy it, right?

GUNNAI TUNAAI
Goodnight tonight

“hito no kokoro wa sonna mono ja kae ya shinai”
“A person’s heart is not something that you can just buy away.”
nariyamanai TEREBI ga NOIZU wo utatteita
The TV continues to drone on, singing out in noise

Translation Notes

  • Having lived her life circle around money, the narrator doesn’t know how to correctly associate with others. This ends with her demanding for “love” instead of asking to be friends, believing that the “love” can be bought or broken with the power of money.
  • It’s very noticeable at this point that the narrator is having doubts in her ideals that money can buy everything (above just feeling the lack of love any person needs), and continues to display this worry through the rest of the lyrics. Even then, she remains stubborn in the only ideal she has ever lived with (presumably), ignoring her inner loneliness.

Author’s Notes

Vocaloid songs have found themselves covering all kinds of subjects that are not usually portrayed in contemporary music. The shoddy school education system that has turned the youth away from dreams; a organ-donating survey, with gratitude to those who desire to donate; the life of a start-up music producer and his development from zero to realized fame. They’ve also covered original stories with familiar lifetime lessons. In regards to this video, I do not refer to the concept of “loneliness” being unique as that’s quite common (really common, so to say). There are songs about “wealth” too, where some actually sing of the opposite of this song, that “money can bring together people”. The concept I look at is the portrayal that “wealth and its upbringing do not teach lessons of love and friendship,” which is a true message to a given extent. The wealthy are not friendless or loveless, but some of the young boys and girls who had been spoiled with riches find themselves struggling socially.

For those wondering about the producer (Noboru↑-P), just like many other producers, he has “graduated” from Vocaloids. It does not inherently mean that he hates using them now. But for many Vocaloid producers, Vocaloids are an outlet to let their musical talents blossom from a seed into a bud. Some will stay with them, but in most cases, they desire to use a “real voice” for their songs. Examples of this includes Ryo from supercell and Honeyworks. To note though, they might revisit Vocaloids, but they wish to work with actual people. I do not think it’s a bad thing; people come and go, and these producers wants to expand their horizons.

This song was recommended/requested to me by Akane Sasu Sora, and he’s going to be covering it in the near future. As you all may witness, his name will continue to pop up as long as songs he wants to cover come around. I recommend taking a look at his covers, as I’ve found myself enjoying them.
