Synopsis

“The Seasons, One by One, Pass on Away” by amazarashi is a song dedicated to the empty lives of innocents. For them, time seems to pass, dying off into an oblivion of despair. Hope to them is almost nonexistent. But, even with these lives that are no different from a disposable pawn, they know they should live on even then. Even their most hated past doesn’t matter anymore since, optimistically, nothing at all matters anymore.

Lyrics

kisetsu wa tsugitsugi shindeiku
The seasons, one by one, pass on away
zetsumei no koe ga kaze ni naru
The voices of despair blow into the wind
iromeku machi no yoenai otoko
The man who can’t get drunk by this colorful town*
tsuki wo miageru no wa koko ja busui
He finds looking at the moon unromantic from here

doro ni ashi mo tsureru seikatsu ni
In this life where my feet get caught in the mud
ame wa ARUKAHOORU no aji ga shita
And the rain that pours tastes just like pure alcohol
APASHII na me de samayou machi de
With eyes of apathy, wandering in this cityplace
kyodou fushin no INOSENTO ekimae nite
The innocent stand suspiciously in front of the station*

It’s almost like a translucent shadow lives on, all in order for me to define who I am at all.*
If I sing to the rain, will the clouds break away? In this bustling summer, I’m just a dry soul now*

haikei imawashiki kako ni tsugu zetsuen no shi
Dear to my loathsome past, I offer to you this poem of farewells
The worst days of my life, and the horrible nightmares, I can’t leave them behind as they keep on telling me to pass on away.
kousei hana wa saki kimi ni tsutau hensen no shi
In your next life, a flower will bloom a poem of change
This song is about grieving, suffering and sadness too, but it won’t ever end, even if it never sees the light of day.

ashita wa tsugitsugi shindeiku
Tomorrow will, one by one, pass on away
seitemo oitsukezu kako ni naru
Even if we chase after them, they’ll become the past before we reach them
iki isoge bokura tomoru hi wa setsuna
But as we go on and rush, our flames only last so long
ikiru imi nado ato kara tsuku
So we’ll think of our life’s meaning later in time

An unclear, unstable ego despises you, even though it upholds the definition of who you are at all.*
At the least, if you sing, will the darkness fade away? Your life has been left up to the rotten dream at the core

haikei imawashiki kako ni tsugu zetsuen no shi
Dear to my loathsome past, I offer to you this poem of farewells
The worst days of my life, and the horrible nightmares, I can’t leave them behind as they keep on telling me to pass on away.
kousei hana wa saki kimi ni tsutau hensen no shi
In your next life, a flower will bloom a poem of change
This song is about grieving, suffering and sadness too, but it won’t ever end, even if it never sees the light of day.

tsukareta kao ni ashi wo hikizutte
With a tired face, I drag my feet along
terikaesu yuuhi ni kao wo shikamete
I scowl at the sun that shines too brightly for me
ikou ka modorou ka nayami wa suru kedo
Shall we go, or return? I might keep up this worry
shibaraku sureba arukidasu senaka
But in the end of all of it, I’ll walk off on my own
sou da ikaneba naranu
That’s right, we have to go after all
nani wa naku to mo ikiteiku no da
Even if we own nothing at all, we have to live on*
bokura wa douse hirotta inochi da
We are just nonetheless disposable pawns, you know?
koko ni oiteiku yo nakenashi no
I’ll leave behind right here what little remains of me…

haikei ima wa naki kako wo omou boukyou no shi
Dear to my long gone past, I think of you with this poem of nostalgia
The worst days of my life, and the horrible nightmares, when I think of when they had all started, it feels like they are from a long time ago.*
In the end, flowers will wilt, reentering the cycle of reincarnation
This song is about grieving, suffering and sadness too, but it won’t ever end, even if it never sees the light of day.

kisetsu wa tsugitsugi ikikaeru
The seasons, one by one, come back to life

Translation Notes

  • “The man finds it hard to be drunk by the colourful town.” This line shows how the colourful life of the town is no more enjoyable for him. He cannot find any joy in life anymore. A sad notion that is carried by many people whose hope in society has been crushed.
  • The station is a place of arrival and departure when you consider the setting to be a city. These “Innocents” are more than likely common businessmen, standing around, hustling and bustling. They are innocent in that they have not committed a deed, but they’ve been downed by the city life to the point of apathy.
  • A translucent shadow refers to how loose one’s identity has become. It barely hangs on, and isn’t even a part of the person him/herself anymore.
  • A contradiction of lines can be found here in that the narrator wonders if they can break away the clouds of rain, although they also claim they’ll become dried up by the sun. Does this signify that they rather die by the heat instead of the being drenched to death by the rain?
  • When talking about this unstable ego, it seems to represent a “mask” that hates the very person that had made it. It’s as if this fake personality understands the flaws of its existence in being the fake identity of the person, hating its creator so that they notice that fact.
  • At this point, the narrator understand that even if their life is meaningless, they can create a meaning for it on their own. It’s not because they have nothing that they should do nothing, but because they have nothing, they have nothing to lose if they ever fail. He would rather leave as much of an impression than staying pessimistic of his future.
  • After clearing the worries he had, the narrator finally realizes that all of his gripes are the past. He had been regretting it all, yet he now knows he can restart. Things fall apart, but that is part of the cycle of life. He should not believe things will eventually change on their own.

Author’s Notes

“The Seasons, One by One, Pass on Away” by amazarashi is another song of inspiration that had entered my life, talking about how despair can be changed into rigid hope. It does not take the usual happy tone, but instead offers a morbid outlook first followed by the eventual epiphany that leads to the resolution. The ending isn’t perfectly happy, as it still speaks of the line “even if it never sees the light of day.” They will keep singing on, even if their newfound hope will never be fulfilled. This plot really rings true for the series it is a part of, “Tokyo Ghoul.”

“Tokyo Ghoul” is for sure one of the series that I will keep recalling from time to time. Admittedly, it may not have been a masterpiece, and for sure didn’t end up as one, but the way it started and some of its characters for sure have left an impression. Some will mark an entire series as bad if it does not live up to their expectation, but I believe that if they can appease a part of your attention, it is a good enough of a series. At times, some series are driven into the ground by bad direction even when headed by a fantastic plot. At other times, a series with a boring plot makes a turn of events that was not expected. It is better to appreciate what you are offered than relish in hating what hasn’t been given, right?
