31584289_800_800

Goodnight Tonight (グッナイ・トゥナイ) is a song by retired Vocaloid producer Noboru↑-P (のぼる↑P), whose actual name is Noboru Etou (江藤昇; eetou noboru), with Vocaloid Rin Kagamine (鏡音リン; kagamine rin) providing the vocals. With the song released on both YouTube and NicoNico Douga on September 19th, 2014, it was Noboru↑-P’s second to last vocaloid song before laying down his work as a Vocaloid producer.
The song was later released later that year on December 17th on a one-track album-single. The album is purchasable on iTunes and indirectly on karent. The original YouTube posting can be seen here.

ともだちほしいです。
I want a friend.
-YouTube’s upload commentary by Noboru↑-P

Synopsis

In Noboru↑-P‘s “Goodnight Tonight,” a lone girl who has all the wealth is unable to understand the simple notion that “love” or “friendship” cannot be bought with money, or any riches of the kind. Yet, she continues to look down on others, believing that relationships can be broken and bought as easy as one-two-three. On lonely nights though, she realizes that deep inside, her heart is actually aching. But goodnight to her as she continues to misunderstand this heartache is and remain ignorant as to what “love” truly may be.

Lyrics

Translation Notes

  • Having lived her life circle around money, the narrator doesn’t know how to correctly associate with others. This ends with her demanding for “love” instead of asking to be friends, believing that the “love” can be bought or broken with the power of money.
  • It’s very noticeable at this point that the narrator is having doubts in her ideals that money can buy everything (above just feeling the lack of love any person needs), and continues to display this worry through the rest of the lyrics. Even then, she remains stubborn in the only ideal she has ever lived with (presumably), ignoring her inner loneliness.

Author’s Notes

Vocaloid songs have found themselves covering all kinds of subjects that are not usually portrayed in contemporary music. The shoddy school education system that has turned the youth away from dreams; a organ-donating survey, with gratitude to those who desire to donate; the life of a start-up music producer and his development from zero to realized fame. They’ve also covered original stories with familiar lifetime lessons. In regards to this video, I do not refer to the concept of “loneliness” being unique as that’s quite common (really common, so to say). There are songs about “wealth” too, where some actually sing of the opposite of this song, that “money can bring together people”. The concept I look at is the portrayal that “wealth and its upbringing do not teach lessons of love and friendship,” which is a true message to a given extent. The wealthy are not friendless or loveless, but some of the young boys and girls who had been spoiled with riches find themselves struggling socially.

For those wondering about the producer (Noboru↑-P), just like many other producers, he has “graduated” from Vocaloids. It does not inherently mean that he hates using them now. But for many Vocaloid producers, Vocaloids are an outlet to let their musical talents blossom from a seed into a bud. Some will stay with them, but in most cases, they desire to use a “real voice” for their songs. Examples of this includes Ryo from supercell and Honeyworks. To note though, they might revisit Vocaloids, but they wish to work with actual people. I do not think it’s a bad thing; people come and go, and these producers wants to expand their horizons.

This song was recommended/requested to me by Akane Sasu Sora, and he’s going to be covering it in the near future. As you all may witness, his name will continue to pop up as long as songs he wants to cover come around. I recommend taking a look at his covers, as I’ve found myself enjoying them.

Ame Nochi Hare – Rita lyrics

8009-little_busters_original_soundtrack_-_cover

“Rain, then Shine” (雨のち晴れ; ame nochi hare) is a song sung by Japanese singer and voice actress Rita (理多), whose real name is Riko Hirai (平井 理子; hirai riko). With the music composed by the two member group PMMK (PostMärchen by Minato Kawai), a group which start in 1999 and consists of director/designer Minato Kawai (川相 湊; kawai minato) and composer Rintarou Iwashita (岩下 倫太郎; iwashita rintarou), the song was used in Key’s 2007 visual novel “Little Busters!” as the ending theme song for the characters Kudryavka Noumi (能美 クドリャフカ; noumi kudoryafuka) and Mio Nishizono (西園 美魚; nishizono mio). The song was first released in the visual novel’s original soundtrack album under the Key Sounds label on August 17th, 2007 along with other songs from the series.
The song was later used in the 2012 anime adaption of the visual novel, utilized as the first season’s ending theme in episodes 14 and 23, episodes which appropriately closes the character arc for Mio and Kudryavka respectively.

Synopsis

With its rainy tones, “Rain, then Shine” by Rita is a short tale of cloudy days. The narrator continues her day as raindrops fall, filling her heart with nostalgia of a person who had taught her many things. The way to count the passing rain. The way to trace scars of the past. And most especially about this person’s words that had told her how the tears of everyone serve to be what weathers the earth, allowing time to pass on. And eventually, there will be the sun and its ray to bless you…

Tomorrow, my umbrella will collect the smell of the sun*
誰かが流した涙を空に帰す

As someone’s fallen tears return to the sky

Translation Notes

  • When translating Japanese, there are times when the sentences or phrases are very context reliant, especially when the subject of the sentence is removed (it still makes sense, but yet again, it requires context). But in the lyrics, it creates a vagueness that allows readers/listeners to interpret the sentence with some freedom. Yet, for some, it can create confusion.
  • The Japanese Thrush (鶫; tsugumi; scientific name: Turdus cardis) is a bird species of the Thrush (Scientific name: Turdidae) family. The family is not exactly commonly known by its name, but exist throughout the world and are known by their species, such as the Robin and the Bluebird.
  • In Japanese, if not noted before, the sun’s ray is depicted as “the dust of the sun”. In this lyrics, they add on that the rays of the sun also have a smell to it, settling on the umbrella.

Author’s Note

Another song under the Key company (might as well make a tag for it), and this time it’s from “Little Busters!”. This series may not exactly match up to the more popular ones, such as “Clannad” or “Angel Beats,” but for sure it doesn’t mean it’s any less popular and fantastic. It digs into childhood memories and nostalgia, which ring within my heart like a drop of rain. I especially started off with this song from the series because my favorite character (and the one I can most identify with) is Mio.

Rita’s voice has entranced me at times for its uniqueness. Although she is seemingly young in her 30s (no official age has been released for her, although there are images around hte net), the voice she produces sounds both cute and quite mature. She sounds somewhat motherly if I had to comment, which is not only uncommon with visual novel singers (at least for me), but it also adds a different depth into the songs she sings. The songs she sung for in Little Busters! are all wonderful, hooking me on the spot when I first heard them. They truly wrench at the heart with a kind yet sad air, filled with a touch of nostalgia.

QUIET HAPPINISS – WORLD ORDER lyrics

Quiet Happiness

Top: China; Bottom: India

“QUIET HAPPINESS” is a song written and choreographed by Genki Sudo (須藤 元気; sudou genki) and performed by WORLD ORDER, a dancing crew assembled by Sudo to dance like robots while wearing business suits. While being the first song released without Sudo after his final video as a front man (he still participates as the director and producer of the group), this song is the first song to be sung by Akihiro Takahashi (高橋 昭博; takahashi akihiro) and Masato Ochiai (落合 将人; ochiai masato), the group’s dancers-now-also-front-men who have replaced Sudo.
The song was released on YouTube on February 27th, 2016 under two videos, one shot in India and another in Shangai, China. Although they feature the same choreography, the different settings offer a different spice to the performances of their respective locations.

Synopsis

With simple lyrics and humble happiness, “QUIET HAPPINESS” by WORLD ORDER chatters about the gratitude to the simplicity of life and enjoying them in a modest fashion. From simple flower viewing to receiving their lost wallet back, the narrator continues their casual life while expressing quietly the happiness they receive from it. They hum. They gaze. They dance. They smile. All so quietly, without letting it burst out in noise.

Lyrics

Translation Notes

  • 仕込んで: Because WORLD ORDER’s lyrics are not released immediately, especially this song which was only released less than a week ago, the Japanese lyrics (thus its translation too) may not be 100% correct.

Author’s Notes

WORLD ORDER continues to share their peaceful message, now with two videos of the same song, delivering a calming song about enjoying the simplicity of happiness. It doesn’t have to be a loud cheer or a big shout; the happiness can be quiet and expressed to only oneself. The humble nature of such a song makes it calming, allowing me to appreciate the passing time.

Even with Genki Sudo removed from the dancing and singing, with Akihiro Takahashi and Masato Ochiai replacing him, the song still has the WORLD ORDER vibe. This may be because Sudo is still the group’s director, choreographer and producer, but in the end, even when he isn’t the front man, WORLD ORDER is still WORLD ORDER. It sort of illustrates that Sudo has handed those roles down to the “next generation” instead of requiring all of WORLD ORDER’s video be identified by his presence alone. It’s his message to us that image is not everything and that the message should ring louder than the people performing. I do still hope to see Sudo cameo in future videos. But until then, I’ll enjoy this quiet happiness of seeing another WORLD ORDER video.

Translation Notes

  • With how English written in Japanese songs are at time misused, I had taken the time to “translated” the phrase into something that appropriately aligns with the meaning of the song. Because the narrator is taking an action because of a way of thinking, “because” (which says the action is defined by the person) is used instead of “so” (which considers that the action defines the person).
  • Japanese lesson time: “ギリギリ” (girigiri) is a Japanese phrase used to refer to a time or situation that is “close” or “just in time” in the respect that the objectives are close to not being met.
    • It is commonly used when someone makes it to a “goal” just in time, such as arriving to a meeting or reaching the racing goal in a given time. It can also be used when having just enough items in stock for an event. In the case of this song, the narrator speaks of how they are at the edge of struggle, barely able to get on through.
  • In this phrase, “ただしい” (tadashii) can refer to both “justice” and “correct”. The original better defines what is being asked in the song, as to what is “just”.

Author’s Notes

“I’m a believer” is quite the song that pulls one’s attention away from the struggle and place it on the future. With such a theme, it fits really well for the shonen sports anime, “Haikyuu!!” along with any other anime of the genre. It is common to associate “going beyond one’s limits” with sport anime, if you have watched enough of them. Of course, it can applied to any shonen story that has the protagonist/s attempting to do better.

SPYAIR is one of those bands that I thought was fresh to the anime scene, with my first listen of them being the first opening theme to the 2013 superhero comedy-drama anime “Samurai Flamenco” (サムライフラメンコ). But in truth, after listening to a couple more of their songs as anime theme songs, I looked them up and found out that they had been contributing music for anime ever since 2010 with their debut to anime being “Last Moment” for the 25th ending them of shonen action anime “Bleach.” To me, it shows to me that I should pay attention to bands more often. But it also shows the fact that we can find a variety of bands (new or old) and their history by looking into anime themes.

Shirushi – LiSA lyrics

cover

“Proof”* (シルシ; shirushi) is a song by Japanese pop singer LiSA (リサ; an acronym of “Love is Same All”), whose actual name is Risa Oribe (織部 里沙 oribe risa), released as the title track to her 8th single under the Aniplex Incorporate label on December 10th, 2014. The lyrics were created by LiSA with the music composed by composer Kayoko (カヨコ).

The song was used as the third ending theme during the Mother Rosario arc of the second season of the supernatural action anime series “Sword Art Online” (the second season officially called “SAO II”), which aired from August 8th to September 26th of 2015. The second season’s second ending theme, “No More Time Machine,” is also included in the single.

Synopsis

As time passes, a single life approaches an impending end. In “Proof” by LiSA, the narrator keeps looking straight forward even as a cliff approaches. She recounts the fond memories and the brief moments that keep on passing. Even though the time she has left is limited and her heart has faltered on the way, she has been able to face her fears as she thinks of her dear person. Although she wishes for many days more to be with this person, having seen that there is proof of her existence within her beloeved’s eyes, she plans to smile until the very end no matter how soon it may be. Her only selfish wish is that her beloved does not disappear before her eyes without her noticing it.

Lyrics

街明かり照らした 賑やかな笑い声と 路地裏の足跡
machi akari terashita nigiyakana waraigoe to rojiura no ashiato
In this town lit by streetlights, filled with the sound of laughter, with footsteps left in the alleyways
伝えたい想いは どれだけ届いたんだろう いつも振り向いて確かめる
tsutaetai omoi wa dore dake todoitan darou itsumo furimuite tashikameru
I wonder how many feelings I want to tell have been recognized*, so I always look back and confirm

いつだって迷わず キミはきっとどんなボクも追いかけてくれるから
itsudatte mayowazu kimi wa kitto donna boku mo oikakete kureru kara
You’re always looking forward, so I already know that you’ll be able to chase after me no matter how I am

じっと見つめた キミの瞳に映ったボクが生きたシルシ
jitto mitsumeta kimi no hitomi ni utsutta boku ga ikita shirushi
Those eyes of yours that I stared straight into, I could see the proof of my living existence
何度も途切れそうな鼓動 強く強く鳴らした 今日を越えてみたいんだ
nando mo togiresouna kodou tsuyoku tsuyoku narashita kyou wo koete mitainda
This heart that has almost broken so many times, I let it ring strongly, so strongly, because I want to try and surpass today

手にした幸せを 失うことを恐れて 立ち止まっているより
te ni shita shiawase wo ushinau koto wo osorete tachidomatteiru yori
Rather than coming to a stand still just because I fear losing this happiness in my hands
一つ一つ大きな 出来るだけ多くの 笑顔咲かせようと たくらむ
hitotsu hitotsu ookina dekiru dake ooku no egao sakaseyou to takuramu
I plan on smiling, one smile at a time, as big of a smile that I can make each time

思い出す ボクらの 通り過ぎた日々がいつも輝いて見える様に
omoidasu bokura no toorisugita hibi ga itsumo kagayaite mieru you ni
For the sake of the old days we spent together, those days that I remember, that they may shine brightly

ぎゅっと握った キミの温もりで 感じた ボクら繋いだ証
gyutto nigitta kimi no nukumori de kanjita bokura tsunaida akashi
Your warmth that I had embraced tightly, I can feel the evidence that we were once connected
キミと今同じ速さで あの日描いた未来を 歩いている
kimi to ima onoji hayasa de ano hi kaita mirai wo aruiteiru
I walk towards the future we drew up that day, at the same speed that you are going at*

いくつ願い叶えてもキミと過ごしたい新しい明日をすぐに
ikutsu negai kanaetemo kimi to sugoshitai atarashii asu wo sugu ni
No matter how many wishes are fulfilled, I am sure that I will always wish
次々にボクは きっとまた願ってしまうから

Again and again for the tomorrow that I could spend together with you

流れてく時間は容赦無くいつかボクらをさらってくから
nagareteku jikan wa youshanaku itsuka bokura wo saratteku kara
The flow of time is unforgiving, since one day it will part us away from each other
瞬きした一瞬の隙に キミの見せる全てを見落とさないように

I just hope that everything about you will not disappear before me in the blink of an eye

じっと見つめた キミの瞳に映った ボクが生きたシルシ
jitto mitsumeta kimi no hitomi ni utsutta boku ga ikita shirushi
Those eyes of yours that I stared straight into, I could see the proof of my living existence
何度も途切れそうな鼓動 強く強く鳴らした
nandomo togiresouna kodou tsuyoku tsuyoku narashita
This heart that has almost broken so many times, I let it ring strongly, so strongly
今日を越えていけなくても
kyou wo koete ikenakuretemo
And even if I can’t surpass today
キミと生きた今日をボクは忘れない
kimi to ikita kyou wo boku wa wasurenai
I will never forget how I lived with you today

Translation Notes

  • Some translations prefer to title this song “symbol,” which isn’t incorrect in definition. But when it comes to this song, I feel that “proof” as a word defines the song better, as the song talks about “leaving behind “the proof of life” rather leaving behind a symbol.
  • In Japanese, the context of this sentence says “I want to tell”. In truth though, this is referring to attempts of telling the feelings rather than the thought of attempting untold feelings. Thus, the narrator wonders how many of her feelings had reached the people she wanted to tell them to, and in some way wonders how many of them didn’t reach. Which is why I used “recognized” than “reached”, as some of the feelings may have reached, but were not recognized by the recipient.
  • The interesting part of this lyric that catches my attention is that the narrator says “at the same speed that you are going at” instead of “we are going at the same speed.” This does significance though in that the narrator is trying to remain at her beloved’s side, not afraid that her end is coming ever closer. Indirectly, I feel the narrator is saying she doesn’t mind going at the speed towards the future, even if it dwindles her time more.

Author’s Notes

SAO isn’t the biggest show in my book, and for good reason. I do not say that it is a crap of a show, but there are some flaws that doesn’t attract my attention enough to not call it a good show either. But, nonetheless, it has had moments where you can awe along with plot points that ruptures your emotions for good reason. Most especially, I have cried at least twice as I watched this show, which led me to read the light novels. If a story can do that, at the least it’s a show worth watching even if there is lots of cringe.

For those who have watched the show, especially the Mother Rosario arc it was aired for, but didn’t understand the meaning behind the translated lyrics right off the bat… I would like to say shame on you, but that’s harsh. While the song remains ambiguous enough so people who haven’t watched the show wouldn’t know for what purpose the song was made for, the song was basically written for Yuuki. As soul-crushing her situation was already, the song only makes it even more heart-rendering. As a character whose time is basically up, the song speaks exactly how she dealt with the situation, along with an “if” situation if she had a lover.

These sentimental but bittersweet love songs are what I like. They value the fragility of life instead of putting it off with “I will love you for an eternity”. The portrayal of the emotions are stronger as they value the memories than just the love. This could be a personal opinion, or just clash of cultural values, but I just wished to state this opinion. Of course, I like love songs of all kinds, but these are the kinds that really get at my heart.

Meiyaka no Kanata – Emi Nitta lyrics

cover1.jpg

“The Reaches of the Pledge”* (盟約の彼方; meiyaku no kanata) is a song by voice actress and singer Emi Nitta (新田恵海; nitta emi), with singer Miho Karasawa (唐沢美帆; karasawa miho) providing the lyrics and composer Ryoutarou Fujinaga(藤永龍太郎; fujinaga ryoutarou) composing the music. The song is the title track to Emi Nitta’s fourth single, which was released on February 17th, 2016 under the emitsun label of the Bushiroad Music Company.

The song is being used for the ending theme to the 2016 supernatural action anime series “Luck & Logic” (ラクエンロジック; raku en rojikku), a series based off Bushiroad’s latest trading card game of the same name.

Synopsis

“The Reaches of the Pledge” by Emi Nitta is a song dedicated to someone the narrator wishes to remain with, as they require each others’ “Logic”. It does not matter to the narrator what actions he must take, even if the vast world weighs him down or it means becoming a demon, he wants to find his beloved. He knows the pain his significant other has gone through, and does not ask of her to tell him any of it. To him, if he gets to see his lover and her smile, his future is paradise. Better to say, he knows their life will be paradise if they are together again.

Lyrics

どれだけ遠くて どれだけ離れても
doredake tookute doredake hanaretemo
No matter how far you are, no matter how much we are parted
必ずわたしが 見つけてみせる
kanarazu watashi ga mitsukete miseru
I’ll definitely show you that I can find you

世界の広さに 弱気になるときでも
sekai no hirosa ni yowaki ni naru toki demo
Even if I become weak from how vast this world is
震える手を 繋いだら 独りじゃない
furueru te wo tsunaidara hitori janai
When my shaking hands hold yours, I’ll not be alone

I need your logic*

If it for what I believe in, I’ll keep on fighting
―負けない―

あなたを守れるなら 悪にでもなる
anata wo mamoreru nara aku ni demo naru
If it’s to protect you, I don’t mind becoming even a demon
その笑顔に会えるなら 未来は楽園
sono egao ni aeru nara mirai wa rakuen
If I can see that smile of yours, my future will be paradise
誰かの空じゃなくて あなたの空へ
dareka no sora janakute anata no sora e
Not just anyone’s sky, I head to your sky
心のままに進もう 恐れることは無い

I’ll continue as I am, without becoming scared
希望はここにある

inochi no omosa wo daite inori wo sasageyou
Embracing the burden of life, I’ll bestow this prayer
正義はここにある

Justice is right here

Translation Notes

  • The title of this song can be translated in multiple ways, due to how the two nouns within the title, “meiyaku” and “kanata“, have multiple depictions. “Reaches” and “pledge” respectively are what I had chose as the typical translations of the terms didn’t feel right, or better to say didn’t make the title unique.
  • In the universe of “Luck&Logic”, “logic” is the essence of everything. It is the rules that bind everything, changing even things from other dimensions to the “logic” of another. Thus, in the context of this song, “logic” can refer to multiple ideas, such as love, comfort and other “rules” that someone would like to pursue.

Author’s Notes

It’s not often where I find myself liking a song from seasonal series that doesn’t have the biggest following. I tend to like ending themes, as they are particularly my kind of songs, but when it comes to “average” anime series, even those ending themes are only par. And “Meiyaku no Kanata” is in some way very typical in nature, yet I find myself entranced by it. Not really easy to explain this without mashing up words, but I felt drawn to this song when I heard it. It’s most likely because I was able to envision an alternative ending clip which awed me as I heard this song.

I’ve never invested my time into trading card games. Not that I do not see their worth, but because of the way I’ve lived till now. During my childhood, I played outside, read books or worked on the fields. During my later years, and even now, it’s been all about studying or working (aside from my deep interest in anime and manga). My history aside, if I ever do find the time to endorse myself into trading card games, such as “Luck & Logic” since we’re on the subject of this song, I would be a soulful collector. While I may have the interest to create or collect strong cards, I would like to connect with each card and see them beyond the idea of “cards”. Even my favorite card isn’t powerful, I would imagine myself interacting with the character in the card. That’s the type of person I am when it comes to trading cards.

Pride Kakumei – CHiCO with HoneyWorks lyrics

Cover2

“Pride Revolution” (プライド革命; puraido kakumei) is a song sung by CHiCO, collaborating with producer group HoneyWorks who composed the music and wrote the lyrics. The song was released as the title track to the collaboration’s third single on August 5th, 2015 under the Music Rain (ミュージックレイン) label. The song was used as the 15th opening theme to the comedy anime series “Gintama” (銀魂), more specifically as the 2nd opening to the series’ 3rd season, “Gintama°” which began airing in April 2015 and is still airing.

Just like most songs done by HoneyWorks, there is an accompanying music video that was released on July 29th, 2015. Due to copyrights, the music video is not available on most sites, although covers of the song with the music video are available. The music video is available on NicoNicoDouga, here.

Synopsis

“Pride Revolution” by CHiCO with HoneyWorks shouts a battle cry of change from looking away from the truth to standing on one’s own two legs. As the title suggests, the narrator goes through change in his ego, moving away from his selfish and cowardice self that was too weak to do anything, eventually becoming a warrior willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of the person who had stayed at his side. He wants to go up and beyond, because that person had given him the reason and strength to live before.

Translation Notes

  • This first stanza is a self-reflection by the narrator of how he only looked at ideals, thus didn’t bother about what he really had to face. Blinded by some of his selfishness, the way he lived was in truth nowhere close to his ideals.
  • These lines can be interpreted as a brief exchange by the narrator andtheir friend/significant other. If one were to look it from the music video’s perspective, the narrator is on their way to save this person, and in exchange, the person reassures the narrator that he/she is still fine.

Author’s Notes

“Pride Kakumei” is another of those powerful anthems that sears the heart. What I like about this song is that the person the narrator refers remains ambiguous whether the person is a dear friend or a lover. Obviously, the music video follows the latter, but the lyrics still stand that it can also talk of a true friend who had remained at one’s side. Yet, the focus is about the narrator’s change from selfish to selfless in one way or another.

HoneyWorks has done some incredible songs in the past years, and “Pride Kakumei” is not their first song used for an anime theme, which means a lot. They’ve also done other collaborations and even vocaloid songs. Most definitely, they are most recognized for their Confession series that literally has its own plot line laid out, and I look forward to when I post the translation to the songs from it. Akane Sasu Sora, a dear friend of mine who cover songs, has done some covers for HoneyWorks songs, so take a look at them at his YouTube channel here. Otherwise, I recommend checking out their other songs nonetheless.
