MACHINE CIVILIZATION – World Order lyrics

maxresdefault

“WORLD ORDER” is a song written and choreographed by Genki Sudo (須藤 元気; sudou genki) and performed by WORLD ORDER, a dancing crew assembled by Sudo to dance like robots while wearing business suits.

The song was first posted on YouTube on March 18th, 2011, which can be seen here. The music video was released in response to the 2011 Touhouku earthquake & tsunami that had occurred a week prior to the video’s release, on March 11th. This is apparent in the fact that the members of WORLD ORDER visit the affected region in the music video. The music video has received much recognition for its message in regards to the disaster, becoming the band’s most watched video on their YouTube channel and also one of its key songs in making the band as popular as it is today.

The song was first featured in their album “2012” which was released on June 20th, 2012 under the Pony Canyon label. It was also remixed and featured in their album “HAVE A NICE DAY” which was released on December 7th, 2014.

The world won’t change on its own. We do change one by one. That makes the world change. The darkness just before the dawn is deepest. So, we do rise up together to greet the brilliant morning truly coming for the human beings.
WE ARE ALL ONE” – Genki Sudo YouTube message

Synopsis

Reflecting on life, “MACHINE CIVILIZATION” by WORLD ORDER is about the titular machine civilization Japan (and likely the world) has become, going through the days like a robot. It makes the narrator wander notice that something is amiss in such a world. Are they, the people of this civilization, really acting together in unity? Are the thoughts they think actual reality, or are they nothing more than an illusion? Will the world be able to change for the better? At such a time, the narrator hopes that a revolution will occur, waking everyone from the stagnant flow of life and introduce them to a world where they can smile and dream freely.

Translation Notes

  • I had to consult the lyrics booklet, generously translated by Genki Sudo himself, in regards to what this sentence was about. Talking about a red shield and its shadows wandering, it’s hard to decipher what is the true meaning behind these words. Does it refer to how the buildings are like in the morning sun? Or is it about something else? I won’t propose much, but would like to admit that if you are lost to its meaning, I’m just the same.
  • Something seems to be amiss in this mechanical civilization. That is what the narrator asks, leading to the questions in the main chorus. It shows that even as he moves with the crowd, he has realized that something is just not right. Otherwise, why would he question about something being amiss?
  • The magic of when you finally realize the meaning behind words. “In the twilight of machinery” is synonymous to saying “in this civilization at dusk.” I came to this conclusion, and believe it is correct, since the lyrics starts off talking about “the morning of machine civilization.” To correspond, the narrator realizes his thoughts at the very end of the day. I did not make changes to the original lyrics as it still delivers the message… and because it sounds much more in rhythm with the song.
  • “Are these thoughts an illusion?” A critical question to ask when you find yourself working like you are on a production line, mindlessly doing the same action over and over. The narrator wonders, “if I am working like a machine, are these thoughts I think of even mine?”
  • A simple comparison. As humans work, the birds sing. I am aware that birds and other animals have their hardship, but the song is creating a comparison that humans at time seem to work as birds are able to sing freely.
  • Omoi” (想い) is different from its other homonyms. Compared to the simple “思い” which usually means “thoughts,” “想い” has a deeper connotation that can be described as “longing” or “heartfelt feelings.” It drives forward the idea that deep emotions are being questioned by the narrator, if they can ever change for the better.
  • At the start of this verse, what is listed can mean many things, from being a list of accomplishments of the human race to being what the narrator is thinking about in regards to the “machine civilization.” Then at the end , there is the number “thirteen.” What is thirteen, and why is it placed within the lyrics? One possible (not definite) theory is that 13 is the next yet unreachable destination. Many common aspects of a civilized world has been limited to 12, such as the calendar months and the clock. In response, 13 is that unforeseen the world may need for it to grow beyond the defined boundaries the machine civilization has placed on itself.

Author’s Notes

It has been a long while since I’ve posted to this blog, out of either being busy with my own schedule and from the fact that I hadn’t been translating as often as I usually do. Nonetheless, it’s best to get back into the translating spirit before I find myself not translating at all. I would be terrified if that actually ever happened, since translating has been a core part of my life for the past decade. I will pray now that I will keep on translating for as long as I can.

“MACHINE CIVILIZATION” admittedly was the song that drew me into loving WORLD ORDER and their thought-provoking messages. When the earthquake & tsunami had hit Japan and news about it sprang forth onto the internet, this song eventually came to my attention. And goodness, I am glad that I found them out then than more recently. For me, it takes time to ride a wave and become an avid fan; if I hadn’t become interested in WO at that time, I believe I wouldn’t be where I am now: the translator of the WO international fansite. Truthfully, I only became one of its translators recently, but the time spent before that nurtured my love for the dance group.

The message of this song is something that I believe should be asked to anyone who are in a rut, or hasn’t realized they are in one. There are time when we feel what we do is dull and pointless at times, and we need to realize that something can be done. In part to this song, Genki Sudo’s message explained how each person, no matter how small they may be in this large civilization, can make a difference in the world. It may be daunting to think like so as an individual, but I too believe in what he says. Every person makes an impact, so don’t belittle yourself and what you do.

Kisetsu wa Tsugi Tsugi Shindeiku – amazarashi lyrics

http://hikarinoakariost.info/

“The Seasons, One by One, Pass on Away” (季節は次々死んでいく; kisetsu wa tsugi tsugi shindeiku; lit. “The Seasons Die Off, One by One”) is a song by the Japanese alternative rock band, amazarashi (あまざらし), lead by the singer and lead guitarist, Hiromu Akita (秋田ひろむ; akita hiromu), who also provided the lyrics and music for the song. The song was released as a part of the band’s first single which was released on February 18th, 2015 under the Sony Music Label. The music video for the song can be seen here.

The song was used as the ending theme to the second season of the 2015 dark fantasy series, “Tokyo Ghoul √A” (Tokyo Ghoul root A).

Synopsis

“The Seasons, One by One, Pass on Away” by amazarashi is a song dedicated to the empty lives of innocents. For them, time seems to pass, dying off into an oblivion of despair. Hope to them is almost nonexistent. But, even with these lives that are no different from a disposable pawn, they know they should live on even then. Even their most hated past doesn’t matter anymore since, optimistically, nothing at all matters anymore.

Lyrics

Translation Notes

  • “The man finds it hard to be drunk by the colourful town.” This line shows how the colourful life of the town is no more enjoyable for him. He cannot find any joy in life anymore. A sad notion that is carried by many people whose hope in society has been crushed.
  • The station is a place of arrival and departure when you consider the setting to be a city. These “Innocents” are more than likely common businessmen, standing around, hustling and bustling. They are innocent in that they have not committed a deed, but they’ve been downed by the city life to the point of apathy.
  • A translucent shadow refers to how loose one’s identity has become. It barely hangs on, and isn’t even a part of the person him/herself anymore.
  • A contradiction of lines can be found here in that the narrator wonders if they can break away the clouds of rain, although they also claim they’ll become dried up by the sun. Does this signify that they rather die by the heat instead of the being drenched to death by the rain?
  • When talking about this unstable ego, it seems to represent a “mask” that hates the very person that had made it. It’s as if this fake personality understands the flaws of its existence in being the fake identity of the person, hating its creator so that they notice that fact.
  • At this point, the narrator understand that even if their life is meaningless, they can create a meaning for it on their own. It’s not because they have nothing that they should do nothing, but because they have nothing, they have nothing to lose if they ever fail. He would rather leave as much of an impression than staying pessimistic of his future.
  • After clearing the worries he had, the narrator finally realizes that all of his gripes are the past. He had been regretting it all, yet he now knows he can restart. Things fall apart, but that is part of the cycle of life. He should not believe things will eventually change on their own.

Author’s Notes

“The Seasons, One by One, Pass on Away” by amazarashi is another song of inspiration that had entered my life, talking about how despair can be changed into rigid hope. It does not take the usual happy tone, but instead offers a morbid outlook first followed by the eventual epiphany that leads to the resolution. The ending isn’t perfectly happy, as it still speaks of the line “even if it never sees the light of day.” They will keep singing on, even if their newfound hope will never be fulfilled. This plot really rings true for the series it is a part of, “Tokyo Ghoul.”

“Tokyo Ghoul” is for sure one of the series that I will keep recalling from time to time. Admittedly, it may not have been a masterpiece, and for sure didn’t end up as one, but the way it started and some of its characters for sure have left an impression. Some will mark an entire series as bad if it does not live up to their expectation, but I believe that if they can appease a part of your attention, it is a good enough of a series. At times, some series are driven into the ground by bad direction even when headed by a fantastic plot. At other times, a series with a boring plot makes a turn of events that was not expected. It is better to appreciate what you are offered than relish in hating what hasn’t been given, right?

“I’ll Call Out Your Name” (名前を呼ぶよ; namae wo yobu yo; lit. “Call Out the Name”) is a song by the 4-man rock band Luck Life (ラックライフ), to be released on May 11th, 2016 under the label Lantis. The lyrics were composed by PON. Although the band has been active since May 2005, the single for this song will represent the band’s major debut. The music video for the song was released on Lantis’s YouTube channel on April 27th, 2016 here.

The song is the first ending theme to the 2016 supernatural mystery seinen series “Bungou Stray Dogs” (文豪ストレイドッグス; lit. “Literary Master Stray Dogs”), whose first season is currently airing. A second season is planned to aire in the fall of the same year. The anime ending may be viewed here.

Synopsis

“I’ll Call Out Your Name”* by Luck Life is a song about the badge of one’s life: their name. Given to us when we were born, it is the sign that we live. We are not some hollow human who keeps droning through life. We are something that has a reason to live. And our beloved ones exemplify that definition as they call out our name. Now, let’s call out their name, so that we can let them know that they live for at least one more reason: so we can let them know that they exist and are loved by us.

Translation Notes

  • Japanese… oh how ambiguous you are. Well, truthfully, Japanese is a language that relies more on context than depending on given subjects. Thus, Japanese does not always include the subject of a sentence, for if one pieces the sentence, it is likely that you will understand what it is about. Here, we find it that the actual title is “XX will shout out a name” which at first sounds rather strange. But even without hearing the song, the first obvious translation of the title is “I’ll shout out your name” as most songs are from a singer to another.
    • In the end, this is something you won’t find easily done in English. Unless I give a command such as “mop the floor,” it’s not so obvious what I would be talking about or who is doing the action. For example, “bought a toy at store” would make people think that it’s an incomplete sentence. In Japanese though, one could say the same phrase “おもちゃを店から買った” and indicate through context that it is themselves who did the action.
    • Of course, I take liberties here, since Japanese (and possibly other languages of similar kind) has a way with their characters that makes it easier to read context (such as their verbs indicating who might have done the action). Even then, I wished to point it out.
  • This could just be me and some of my insufficiency with English, but writing “long uphill” felt rather strange. Instead I wrote “tall hill,” but wished to note the original translations included “long uphill” and considers “uphill” as a path than a hillside/slope.
  • I’ve translated this line based on the original lyrics. But, I believe that people may reinterpret the line as they wish. I say this because it is one of the line I stumbled upon when attempting to recorrect it. In the end, it states, “I will call out your name.”
  • There is a contrast in what the singer claims here. “A world too bright” and “a life alone”. It signifies that even if the future is either bright or dank, he wants his name to be called. Either way, he wants to hear his name being shouted out by someone, as it is irreplaceable compared to any future.
  • What I like most about this song is that it strikes the heart. It does not contain words of encouragement or of love. It simply plays on the fact that I (and definitely many others) have felt at one point in life that my life was insignificant. Yet, when we heard someone call for us, by our name… we felt there has always been a reason to live. This gift… called “our name,” whether if it’s “John” or “Marcy” or some other name of foreign origin… It may not be easy to see the reason physically, but the fact that someone calls our name means that we are needed somewhere. I hope that others who hear this song thinks of the same.

Author’s Notes

What a song… I believe I’ve made this point clear enough with multiple of the songs I’ve translated and posted on this site, but the subjects that Japanese songs tend to explore digs deep. At first, it felt like a song about calling out one’s name, but it eventually held a deeper meaning as it talked about how one’s name is the collective gift that represents the significance of one’s life. Truly a beautiful song, even if it’s the typical J-pop beat.

I’ll say right now, but I haven’t watched “Bungou Stray Dogs” yet, a first on this blog. All of the songs I have translated so far, I have either played the game they are featured in or watched the series they are a part of. But in this case, a friend showed me the song and asked for translations. To be more exact, that friend is DimaLancaster. Through some connections with other YT singers who I know, he has been making a few requests here and there. I’m honored to be able to provide him with lyrics where he would like them, and in most cases, he has been asking for the lyrics of songs that haven’t been released on CD yet. Was going to make a joke that he’s using me as a tool, but knowingly, I’m bad at jokes. Anywho, check out his channel. It’s worth the listen for sure. When I first heard some of his songs, it reminded me of this one quote: “When you find yourself mouthing or singing the lyrics, you are listening to a good song. When you find yourself playing the instruments too, now that’s a fantastic song.”

Time Machine – 1640mP feat. Miku Hatsune lyrics

Time machine f loading screen by guitar

“Time Machine” is a song co-produced by vocaloid producers 40meterP (40㍍P; yonjuu meetoru P, also known as “40mP”) and 164, or “1640㍍” (1640 meetoru) in regards to their collaboration, with the former providing the music and the latter being the lyricist. With Miku Hatsune (初音ミク; hatsune miku) at the mic, the song was first uploaded on NicoNico Douga on September 13th, 2010, later uploaded on YouTube on December 2nd, 2011. The illustrator for the song’s official art is guitar (ぎた; gita).

The song was first released in EXIT TUNES’ compilation album “EXIT TUNES PRESENTS Vocaloanthems” which was released on September 15th, 2010 under the EXIT TUNES’ label. It has been included in other vocaloid albums, especially 40meterP’s second doujin album, “kotaeawase” (コタエアワセ; lit. “Reviewing Answers”), which was released on January 16th, 2011 at THE VOC@LOiD M@STER 15, under the label 40 Meter Hashi.

The song’s MMD (MikuMiku Dance) music video can be seen here at NicoNico Douga. For the YouTube side, watch it here. The NND version is recommended if you do not wish for any interference in the video (ie. gameplay aspects).

Synopsis

A song of farewells, “Time Machine” by 164 and 40meterP illustrates the parting of the narrator with someone who they love. With the time for departure arriving once again, the narrator boards the “time machine.” Although they have gotten used to seeing the sad expression of their dearest, it does not change that each parting is just as heart wrenching as the last. Even if the memories remain and they’ll meet again, the narrator looks forward to returning to this significant other.

The sound of departure that calls for me suddenly ringing out

That crying expression I’ve gotten used to, I won’t be able to see it for a while

While being shaken within the time machine, I’ll return again for sure

Translation Notes

  • Despite it seemingly “home” in the lyrics, “ホーム” (hoomu) is referring “(a train station’s) platform” which can be pronounced as either “purattofoomu” (プラットフォーム) or “purattohoomu” (プラットホーム) in Japanese. Instead of referring it as simply “platform,” I included “station” in the lyrics.
  • In this part of the lyrics, “sign” refers to a “signal” or a “queue” that the significant other is about to say “have a safe journey.”
  • In English, just like many other cultural terms, “itterasshai” does not have a perfect translation. The opposite/response, “ittekimasu” (行ってきます), has something quite close (“I’ll be off” or “I’m going”) that sounds alright, but “itterasshai” awkwardly means “please go off” or “go on” if directly translated. Since “itterasshai” is used commonly when people leave a home and is expected to eventually return, I chose a phrase with a similar meaning in English: “have a safe journey.”
  • Hinted by the lyrics, the narrator is riding a non-specified vehicle (although likely a train). And as the narrator looks back out the window, they see their significant other shrink into the distance.
  • While possibly not an actual time machine, the lyrics suggests the vehicle is like a time machine. With how the likely setting of the song is at the end of summer vacation (supported by the song’s MMD music video), the narrator leaves on a “time machine” only to return at a later date. It may also refer to the recipient’s perspective where the narrator will return after “traveling through time” and greeting them later in the future.

Author’s Notes

A time machine. Not in the form of a vehicle to go back to the past, but the thought of it being a device that moves forward in time. In the end, “time machine” refers to any machine/vehicle that is capable of moving back and forward in time. Of course, we wouldn’t think a simple train would be considered as one, but the way this song has described it has made me believe that in some respect, it is one. When you see someone off at a train station and eventually they return how many hours, days or even years after they left, that train feels like a time machine. Yes, you and the other may have grown in age, but nonetheless, time has passed and they have returned on that same train. Somewhat romantic, when you think about it.

Departures at the end of the vacation or any extended visit is usually a tear-jerking event between friends and family, especially when the visit is to a place you know you won’t visit often. Even if it’s somewhere you go to almost every month, to some people, that small span of time can feel very long, even if you yourself do not think so. And when you visit someone who is out somewhere that is more rural, where there isn’t exactly much to do, time toils more on a person’s patience than those who are “busy” in the city. It brings me back to my days out in the country when I saw some of my friends leave after a long vacation. Even now, there are some significant others I haven’t seen in a while and am waiting on this metaphoric platform for when we ever meet again…

WORLD ORDER – WORLD ORDER lyrics

world-order-genki-sudo-album-cover

“WORLD ORDER” is a song written and choreographed by Genki Sudo (須藤 元気; sudou genki) and performed by WORLD ORDER, a dancing crew assembled by Sudo to dance like robots while wearing business suits. SPACE WALKER has also helped with writing the lyrics. The song was WORLD ORDER’s, thus Sudo’s, first ever song released, marking the beginning of the group’s career. It has become the group’s recurring theme song.

The song was first posted on YouTube on December 12th, 2009, which can be seen here (with the original five-man members). Since then, it has been showcased in many videos of different subjects, including one located in New York and a retake done in Tokyo.

The song has been released in multiple of the band’s albums, remix or not. It was first featured as the title track of an album released on July 7th, 2010 by P-Vine Records.

Synopsis

The song that started it all, “WORLD ORDER” by WORLD ORDER is a song that makes a simple gesture to the issues that stir in reality. The sugarcoated lies. The unnerving truth. And all of the void in between that doesn’t fulfill everyone’s desires. With this song, WORLD ORDER offers that you follow your dreams and dance in hopes of order returning to the world.

Translation Notes

  • A beautiful lie and a distasteful truth… a true representation that the reality is harsh while fantasies are so admirable. We either hunker down as we face realism or escape off to the sweet idealism. Those are the two voices that exist in this world, with none laid in the middle.
  • “White” is an untainted colour, like an untouched canvas. With a new generation comes a new beginning in creating a new way for the world.

Author’s Notes

The original song that spurred the beginning of what we know as the Japanese dance group WORLD ORDER,  WORLD ORDER (the song) is the inspiring theme of the band. Overlapping with the band’s name and their message, the song is for sure Sudo’s first attempt at telling the world through his song of how people need to change from the droopiness of the current age. Unlike what most people think when they hear “world order“, Sudo is looking to a future that does not attempt to break the world apart but to piece it together in unity so that everyone can dance together. It’s a world order in the ways of fighting an enemy that is not someone out there, but the rigidness that has been instilled in this world on the inside.

The recurring praise to WORLD ORDER’s songs is not only in the message they attempt to send, but also their dance. What also grabs the attention of many is that these videos are done in public, without shooing away the others who happen to appear in the video. this does lead to some people getting in the way of the camera or looking awkward in the video, but there seems to be another message to that. With how this song asks people to dance in the moment (with many more songs stating this too), the group dancing in public is their way of abiding by the message they tell everyone: to dance in the moment, regardless of the gaze placed upon them, as it is what the world should do instead of coldly abiding by the stiff regime of civilization. Who knows, this thought may be wrong, but nonetheless their presentation remains spectacular.

Translation Notes

  • Refers to drowning figuratively in the honey-flavored delusions.
  • By now, the meaning behind the title is clear. If not, it refers to diving into reality bare naked, in the sense of going in with what you believe instead of clothing yourself with precautions.

Author’s Notes

Another light novel-based series. Oh, how wonderful! (no sarcasm) Whether if it’s an old series getting adaption or a relatively new one, I invite them all. Some adaptions have been a spectacle to watch, such as the contemporary mystery series “Heaven’s Memo Pad” (神さまのメモ帳; kami-sama no memochou; lit: God’s Memo Pad) by Hikaru Sugii (杉井 光; sugii hikaru), while others have been a bitter taste in the mouth, such as the fantasy-action romance series “Absolute Duo” by Takumi Hiiragi-Boshi (柊☆たくみ; hiiragiboshi takumi). In other cases, the original series’ plot didn’t interest, but that’s what you call “people’s preference”. I won’t go on to naming what I hate in regards to anime/manga/LN contents as the Author’s Notes section is not supposed to be dedicated to that kind of discussion, no less this entire blog. But, I will state my passion and love, such as the fact that Koito Minase is my favorite character from Musaigen.

Naked Dive is one of many Japanese songs that contains English songs which are hard to comprehend by ear due to the Engrish-level. Some of it is identifiable, but when I had translated this before the official release (for Akane Sasu Sora), certain lyrics were hard to hear out. And now that I translate it with the booklet, it’s obvious that there is a good amount of Engrish, while there also the chance that my ears didn’t pick up the words correctly. But everyone hears it all a bit differently, so transcribing inaccuracy was going to happen somewhere.

Sugar Song and Bitter Step – UNISON SQUARE GARDEN lyrics

cover

“Sugar Song and Bitter Step” (シュガーソングとビターステップ; shugaa songu to bitaa suteppu) is a song by the Japanese pop band UNISON SQUARE GARDEN (ユニゾン・スクエア・ガーデン; unizon sukuea gaaden). With Tomoya Tabuchi (田淵智也; tabuchi tomoya) as the composer and lyricist, the song was released on May 20th, 2015 as the title track of the band’s 10th single. It used as the ending theme to the 2015 supernatural action anime “Blood Blockade Battlefront” (血界戦線; kekkai sensen).

A short version of the song’s music video has been released on YouTube here on May 15th. The music video was officially released on the band’s 10th anniversary album, “DUGOUT ACCIDENT” which was release on August 22nd of the same year.

Synopsis

As the narrator walks the streets in “Sugar Song and Bitter step” by UNISON SQUARE GARDEN, he finds how terribly bland the world is right under his nose. This leads him to question his values and thoughts, wondering if he is free or not. This pushes the narrator to create an individual beat, which becomes a song of their own. A song that will live on even if the infrastructure of the constructed world collapses. In this personal revolt, the narrator wants to surprise the world that is filled with sugarcoated songs and dredging steps.

Translation Notes

  • “Et cetera” is often used when a list is long and requires the need to be cut short. It can also indicate the insignificance of certain items on the list that do not need to be named with the others. Here, fundamentalism (strict religion) belittles the purpose of a heart, which the narrator witnesses.
  • Q.E.D. stands for “quod erat demonstrandum,” a Latin phrase which means “which is what had to be proven”. It’s commonly used at the end of a mathematical or philosophical proof, signifying the idea of self-demonstration and “thus, the result”.

Author’s Notes

When someone mentions “Kekkai Sensen,” admittedly the first thing that comes to mind is its attention-catching ending. You have all the characters from the series happily dancing on top of a curtained stage, either doing so as a group or on their own. It’s the type of fun scene that you would feel like join with the thought “I want to do the same can-can gig with them.” A good handful of Japanese endings are wacky and place a contrast to the actual series (the livelihood here in contrast to the series action-packed fighting) and this ending seems to take the cake for its simple stage-dance.

I have a fondness for songs with a deeper meaning to them. Not that no one else doesn’t like them, but I don’t mind digging into the lyrics and understand what I’m listening to. Just by doing that, many of the songs I’ve listened to have been more empowering than when I simply listened to their tunes. It creates this deeper connection with those songs, and even if I don’t 100% identify with what is being told, it allows me know a little more about the world.
